It has been said that if the Bill of Rights were to be put before the American people today, it is doubtful whether it would be approved. The same might be said of the pledge to uphold the Constitution that all public officeholders make in their oath of office. If that oath of office were rewritten today, it would probably be changed to read, "I swear loyalty and fealty to the President of the United States and promise to uphold his judicial nominees."
