MAHABLOG has a roundup of media coverage on the Republican leadership's latest demonstration of their contempt for democracy and republican (small r) government, which occurred yesterday, when James Sensenbrenner, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, cut off debate on the reauthorization of the Patriot Act by storming out of the hearing room and turning off the microphones while Democrats were still speaking.

Righties, who hate democracy and representative government, were delighted. And did I mention that righties hate freedom and America and Jesus? But you know that.
[...]
Sensenbrenner's primary stated reason for shutting down the meeting was that witnesses were going off on tangents like Gitmo that were unrelated to the Patriot Act. I didn't watch the hearing, but seems to me there is a legitimate point to be made that connects Gitmo to the Patriot Act. And that is, how can we trust this Administration not to abuse the Patriot Act? How can we know the Bushies wouldn't use the police powers awarded them by the Patriot Act for their own political purposes?

And the answer is, we can't.
