JUAN COLE'S FEB. 26 POST about the status of women in Iraq makes the excellent point that merely reserving one-third of the seats in a future Iraqi parliament for women does nothing to achieve equity or justice for women. Cole gives the example of Phylis Schlafly as a reminder that being a woman who is actively involved in national politics does not mean you support equal rights for women. Cole also pointed to the continuing gender gap in Congress to demonstrate that if the U.S. wants Iraqis to walk the walk of gender equality in Iraq, we should do more to walk that walk here at home.
