IF ALL THE ENERGY that scientists, media pundits, diet mavens, fitness faddists, and the arbiters of beauty and fashion in our society collectively spend on studying, writing, reading, publishing, analyzing, comparing, pontificating on, and worrying about how fat Americans are, how fat they were, how fat they will be, how much fatter they are now than they were yesterday, and how alarming it all is, were spent on finding a cure for cancer, or for AIDS, or effective treatments for depression or stress-related conditions like -- heart disease! -- then think how much more productive and happy we all would be.
