Hymns of Peace in a Land of Violence

Read Juan Cole's post on Christmas in the Middle East. It's pretty sad -- and the lines from "Silent Night" between the violent death described in each paragraph make it sadder still.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but seeing the words of one of the loveliest Christmas hymns ever written superimposed on a backdrop of war atrocities in the very place where Jesus was born is depressing beyond words.
